Bobcats Fall Short in Elimination Game Against Central Arizona

Beatrice, Nebr. – After falling to the elimination bracket in the West District tournament on Friday, Southeast Community College faced Central Arizona College in a rematch for a spot in the championship game on Saturday.

The Bobcats were the visitors in this matchup, and started the game with Gabe Dalton getting a hit-by-pitch. Smolinski singled, and Gabe Dalton advanced to third on a wild pitch to Jack Hogan, and found his way home when Hogan singled to score the first run and take an early 1-0 lead.

Reed McConnell took the mound for SCC, and took down the first Vaquero batter in three pitches. An error by Hogan at first put one on base, and Chris Parkin hit a home run to snatch the lead from the Bobcats 2-1.

SCC got sat down in order to start the second inning, and Central Arizona brought in one more run in the bottom of the second after another Bobcat error led off the second inning.

In the third inning Crew Moeller saw the count go full before striking out, but Dalton responded well with a home run off the first pitch he faced to bring SCC back within one at 3-2.

The fourth through sixth innings saw several batters stranded by both teams, including two in scoring position for the Bobcats. In the fifth inning Dalton was tagged out going home on a grounder to third base, and Brady Webb made it to second base in the sixth before a groundout and strikeout ended the inning.

A single from Dalton was the only SCC hit in the seventh inning. On the Vaqueros's side, a double play turned by Dalton stopped the bleeding after three straight batters got on base and one run scored, making it a 4-2 game.

In the top of the eighth inning, Hogan found base on a double, and Webb pushed him to third with a single, but two straight strikeouts ended the inning, leaving a comeback necessary in the ninth.

The ninth inning went in similar fashion to the tenth inning against Salt Lake, as Moeller led off with a flyout to second, Dalton followed suit, and Smolinski was 30 feet short of the fence with a flyout to left field that secured Central Arizona's spot in the West District Championship.

The Bobcats finished the season with a total record of 32-26 as Region 9 champions for the third time in four years.
