Temperatures hovered close to 100 outside and the basketball action inside the Johnston High School Gym in West Des Moines, Iowa was hot as well. SCC played three games in the tournament, winning two of them, but the scores were not the focus. Player evaluation and simulated game action was the goal of the weekend.
Head Coach
Joel Wooton begins his 21st season at the helm. He brought three quarters of what his squad will look like this fall. Several players were not available for the tournament, but they'll be ready to go as the program embarks on its first season as a NJCAA DI school. Sophomores Marquis Tolliver and
PJ Newbill will be one of the top back court tandems this year. They had flashes already in this tournament. Sophomore
Alex McCollum turned heads, showing up with an additional 20 pounds of muscle on his 6'4" frame. He had his hands full playing in the post, but he'll move to his power forward position when the bigs get on campus. Expect to see the off season gym work pay off for the Thornton, Colorado native.
The Bobcats will start practice on August 5th.
