The SCC Baseball Team improved to 19 and 17 on the year with a 3 games to 1 series win over Northeastern Junior College over the weekend. Assistant Head Coach Tyson Parks provides a series recap.
Game 1: SCC 8 NJC 5
"Game 1 was a game that we kept battling and finally
Jack Hogan delivered a big swing with a grand slam to take the lead for good in the 6th inning. Starter,
Brandon Lundquist battled through 4.1 innings.
Reed McConnell, who came in and finished the final 2.2 innings, picked up the win."
Game 2: SCC 14 NJC 3
"The bats came to life picking up 13 hits in the game and building a lead, eventually delivering a win by the score of 14-3. Starter
Garrett White wasn't quite as sharp but still battled through five innings for us and held NJC down on a beautiful day for baseball.
Isaiah O'Brien finished the final 2 frames and allowed us to end the 9 inning game in 7 innings."
Parks added, "Day one ended with a Friday sweep for us and that was good to see. We used 4 pitchers to get through the first two games."
Game 3: SCC 1 NJC 4
"On Saturday,
Jaxson Cahoy gave us a start that was good enough to win the game. We didn't get enough run production in game 3." "NJC's starting pitcher did a good job of challenging our hitters and we didn't do a good job of being disciplined, and swinging at pitches in the strike zone. That will get you in trouble when the wind blows 20 miles an hour." "We just needed to do more offensively. We didn't battle as a group as hard as we needed to in order to get the job done and that is frustrating." "Give NJC credit for coming out and outplaying us in game 3."
Game 4: SCC 10 NJC 2
"In game 4, we jumped on them early and again the bats did the job, and the pitchers backed them up. We scored 7 runs in the first 3 innings, that was nice to see." "The conditions hadn't changed at all for the day, but we were more focused than we were the previous game to get things done. We executed things early and built a lead.
Ben Ayala,
Cael Clancy, and
Will Flege were outstanding on the mound, locking up the series win for us."
Additionally, Parks had this to say, "The offense pounded out 10 or 11 hits, but it was more about our execution of things with runners on early that allowed us to get separation in the last game." "I also thought for the most part, our defense was tough all weekend. If we continue to sell out defensively and execute our offense, we will be better and better." "We knew NJC would play hard both days. Their staff does a good job with them, and everyone plays hard. That what makes it fun. Our kids have continued to answer the call in our conference series so far through the first four weeks."
Parks looks ahead, "This week is another busy one with Hutch on Tuesday at the "C" in a single 9 inning game and then Lamar comes to town for a 4 gamer this weekend." "The hope is that we continue to push forward and keep going after each week. We're starting to clean up some things we needed to early in the season and that's good." "We're proud of the kids for putting us in a good situation in our conference. All we can do is continue to work what our goals are and that's all we can do." "Thanks to our fans who have continued to show up and support us. We're looking forward to seeing everybody this week!"
