Las Vegas, N.M. – Southeast Community College softball finished the season with four wins over Luna Community College in a trip out west on Saturday and Sunday. The Bobcats finished the season with a record of 31-18, with a conference record of 25-7.
Southeast 9 – Luna 7
SCC made a comeback in their first game of the weekend after trailing 5-0 after the second inning.
The bases got loaded with just one out in the third inning following singles by
Brittney Isbell and
Gracie Moe and a hit-by-pitch for
Lexi Paskach.
Reyse Zobel hit a home run well over the center field wall to clean up, making it 4-5.
The next three batters all got on base, including
Keira Carswell who batted in
Brett Young to tie the game. A lineout from
Vanessa Butler and a single from
Laila Cuevas each scored a run, and
Tatum Heimerman completed the trip around the lineup with a two-run home run to score the final two runs in SCC's third inning frenzy and lead 9-5.
The Rough Riders brought in a runner in the sixth inning and scored another in the seventh with a runner on base, but she was left stranded.
The Bobcats had 14 hits against Luna's 11, and each team had one error.
Kinsley Mohan started the game at pitcher and threw six innings. She allowed 10 hits and three earned runs while she notched seven strikeouts.
Seinna McEntire came in for relief for the final inning and allowed one hit and one earned run.
Southeast 12 – Luna 6
Eight straight SCC batters made it on base before an out was recorded in the first inning of Game 2, and six of them scored. The inning started with an error, a walk, another error and two RBI-singles from Zobel and Young to make it 4-0. A single from
Ashlyn Acree made it 6-0, Heimerman scored two more with a single in her second at-bat, and a Paskach single made it 9-0 before the end of the inning.
A solo home run and a two-run home run by the Rough Riders made it 9-3 after the second inning.
Paskach got back on base in the third after a walk, and Zobel hit a single to get Paskach into scoring position. Another single, this time off the bat of
Vanessa Butler, brought in Paskach.
Another home run by Luna made it 10-6 in the bottom of the fourth inning, which would be the end of the Rough Riders' scoring.
In the top of the seventh, Zobel put the finishing touches on the win with a two-run homer to center field.
The Bobcats scored 12 runs on 12 hits, and Luna scored six runs on six hits. The Bobcats committed three errors while the Rough Riders recorded two.
Addisyn Thompson threw first. She recorded one strikeout through three and two-thirds innings and allowed five hits and six earned runs. McEntire came in for relief with five strikeouts and one hit allowed.
Southeast 10 – Luna 1
A homer from Paskach brought in Heimerman and Moe in the first inning to make it 3-0, and Luna responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning.
The Bobcats once again found themselves with a big third inning in Game 3. Carswell hit a two-RBI double. Acree and Butler each recorded RBI-singles, and Heimerman sent the second pitch she saw over the left field fence to make it 10-1. After that, only one batter for each team found a base.
SCC recorded nine hits to the Rough Riders' 2, and there were no errors.
Mohan pitched the whole game for the Bobcats and notched eight strikeouts and only allowed one earned run.
Southeast 16 – Luna 15
After SCC stranded a runner to start the game, Luna responded with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to get on the board first.Â
Bri Houchin answered back with a three-run homer for the Bobcats to take the lead 3-2, but it was shortlived.
Strategic hitting from the Rough Riders put three runners across in quick succession. A sacrifice bunt put a runner into scoring position, and a ground out, single, walk, and another single made it 5-3.
Paskach doubled to lead off the second inning and Zobel grounded out to the shortstop who made the throw to first but couldn't beat Paskach home, making it a one score game again.
Luna scored from a single in the bottom of the fourth after a walk to start their half of the inning, putting them up 6-4.
Heimerman hit her third home run of the weekend to start the fifth inning, and a triple from Young sent Zobel across the plate to tie the game.
Luna took advantage of an extended fifth inning and scored five runs while only recording two hits. A home run brought in two runners, and a single and four walks brought in two more, and a passed ball made it 11-6 after five innings.
Cailey Craddock,
Dajana Garrison and Moe all made contact in the top of the sixth but only one runner was able to score.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Rough Riders dealt more damage with a double, a groundout and a single each scoring a run to extend their lead.
The Bobcats responded with a home run from Carswell, and a series of hits that culminated in another Zobel home run made it 15-14 to give SCC it's first lead of the game.
Luna tied it up quickly with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, and that tie would remain all the way into the ninth inning.
Garrison singled to lead off the ninth inning, and Heimerman created a fielder's choice that put out Garrison but left Heimerman on second.
Lexi Paskach scored the winning run with a ground ball to third base that resulted in an error, sending Heimerman home.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Mohan took charge with two strikeouts to help seal the series sweep in the final game of the regular season.
SCC had 20 hits against the Rough Riders' 13. The Bobcats committed one error and Luna committed three.
McEntire started on the mound and threw three and one-third innings with three strikeouts and six earned runs. Thompson took over and allowed six more earned runs in three innings. Mohan finished the game with three strikeouts—two in clutch time—and only one hit to clinch the game in the ninth inning.
The Bobcats are back in action for the Region 9 tournament this week in McCook. SCC is the No. 2 seed, and they will play either Northwestern Junior College or Lamar Community College on Friday, May 8 at 11 a.m.
