Bobcat Softball Gets Back on Track for Final Stretch

Beatrice, Neb. – Southeast Community College won their final home series of the season by taking three games over Northeastern Junior College at Hannibal Softball Complex over the weekend.

SCC 2 – NJC 0

It was a battle of pitchers on Friday afternoon. The first four innings were scoreless until an error put Ashlyn Acree on base in the fifth inning. Dajana Garrison pinch ran for Acree, and an RBI single by Tatum Heimerman put the Bobcats on the board. Another RBI single from Lexi Paskach made it 2-0, and the Plainsmen did not record a hit for the rest of the game.

Heimerman, Gracie Moe, and Ashlyn Acree each recorded a hit, and Paskach recorded two.

The no-hitter for Kinsley Mohan ended in the fourth inning on a double by NJC, but she remained in full control with nine strikeouts and only three walks while facing 24 batters. The SCC defense also committed zero errors.

SCC 4 – NJC 3

The batters had better luck in the second game. Scoring started in the second inning after an error and two singles put NJC ahead 1-0. In the bottom of the third inning Seinna McEntire and Moe each singled, and two straight walks for Paskach and Reyse Zobel brought the game to a tie, 1-1.

The Plainsmen quickly recaptured the lead with two runs on three hits in the top of the fourth. Heimerman made contact again for a single, and a Zobel double brought one more across the plate to cut the Plainsmen lead to one heading into the sixth inning.

Both teams went 0-3 in the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh, NJC loaded the bases with three straight singles before McEntire threw her fifth strikeout of the game and a fly out ended the half inning.

McEntire continued her clutch performance with a single to start the bottom of the seventh, and the Bobcats found themselves at the top of the batting order when it mattered most. Hiemerman followed McEntire with another single. Moe laid down a sacrifice bunt to get SCC into scoring position, and a hit from Paskach tied the game 3-3 with only one out.

Zobel waited in the box and was rewarded with a walk on four pitches, and a single from Brett Young sent Heimerman home for a walk-off win.

SCC recorded 10 hits in the outing, and Heimerman led the team with three. Zobel had two RBI.

McEntire started on the mound and only allowed two earned runs in the outing while she also recorded two hits of her own.

SCC 6 – NJC 5

The Bobcats wasted no time scoring on Saturday morning. After three straight fly outs to start the game by the Plainsmen, Heimerman was walked to start the bottom of the first inning. Moe and Paskach failed to reach base, but Zobel got hit by a pitch and Young connected to bring in the first run of the game.

NJC found their legs in the fourth inning with a single and a double to tie the game. The Bobcats had a parallel answer in the bottom of the inning to take back the lead 2-1.

In the top of the sixth, two singles and a home run put the Plainsmen back on top 4-2 before Mohan contained the damage with a strikeout. McEntire, Heimerman, and Moe each tallied a single in the bottom of the inning to earn a run for the Bobcats and cut the NJC lead to one.

In the seventh inning Zobel reached base on an error, and Young recorded another hit to get the Bobcats into scoring position. Carswell grounded out, and McEntire reached first on a fly ball to center field to load the bases.

Acree was up to bat next, and Zobel was subbed out for pinch runner Cailey Craddock. Craddock wasted no time and successfully stole home to tie the game.

In the eighth inning, the Plainsmen kept the pressure on. Three singles allowed them to take back the lead 5-4, but McEntire was able to reel it in from the mound and end the inning with no further damage.

Heimerman immediately answered NJC with a double, and Moe followed up with a hard-hit ground ball to center. Heimerman was able to beat the throw to bring the game back to a tie.

A fielder's choice from Paskach and a walk from Zobel gave SCC it's first chance to end the game. Young took it, hitting a long fly ball to right field which gave Paskach plenty of time to run in the final score of the game for the Bobcat's second straight walk-off win.

Hiemerman, Young, and McEntire each recorded three hits in the series-clinching win. Young and Moe batted in two runners and Mohan recorded one RBI.

Mohan began the game on the mound. She allowed five hits and four earned runs with five strikeouts to boot. Kayla Norberg took the mound for relief in the seventh before McEntire finished the game on the mound in the eighth with a strikeout and three hits allowed.

NJC 4 – SCC 1

In the final game of the series, the Bobcats got on the board early from hits by Heimerman and Moe and a hit-by-pitch for Zobel to make it 1-0. That would be the end of the scoring for SCC in the bout.

NJC scored three runs in two hits in the fourth inning, and a double followed by an error brought in the fourth and final score for the Plainsmen.

McEntire and Acree also recorded hits in the fourth inning, but SCC was unable to capitalize.

McEntire pitched the first five and one-third innings with two strikeouts and five hits. Addisyn Thompson came in as relief and allowed two hits and a walk.

The Bobcats move to 27-19 on the season and remain in third in the region. SCC is back in action on Saturday, May 2 at 12:00 p.m. Mountain time at Luna Community College for a four-game series.
