Phillip Duncan is an esteemed coach who brings a wealth of experience and success to his role as the new Men's and Women's Cross Country/Track and Field coach at Southeast Community College.
Previously, Duncan served as the Graduate Assistant Men's and Women's Cross Country/Track and Field coach at Midland University From Janurary 2020 to May 2022. His impact on the program had been significant, coaching numerous athletes to impressive achievements at both conference and national levels. Under his aiding guidance, five athletes have made eight appearances in the NAIA National Championships, with one athlete becoming a conference champion and another earning the distinction of being an NAIA All-American in the marathon.
Also during Duncan's time at Midland University he assisted in guide running during practices and competitions for a blind runner, whom he still coaches and guides run with today with the goal of guiding the athlete in the Paralympic Marathon at the France Paralympic Games in 2024 or the Los Angeles Paralympic games in 2028.
Before joining Midland, Duncan excelled as an Assistant Cross Country coach at Hot Springs High School in Hot Springs, South Dakota. In 2019, his coaching skills were showcased when his efforts aided in coaching the SDHSAA Cross Country State Championships Boys Class A Runner Up.
Beyond coaching, Duncan is an accomplished distance runner himself running more than 30,000 lifetime miles all around North America and finishing more than 1,000 races ranging from the 400m to the Marathon, as well as competing in multiple United States Cross Country National Championships. As a member of the Lincoln Running Company-Team Nebraska club, he holds impressive records, ranking top 10 all-time in the club's history in the half marathon (66:30), road 5K, the cross country 8K, cross country 10K (29:30) and Marathon (2hr 25min). His victories include winning the 2019 Good Life Halfsy, 2019 Mount Rushmore Half Marathon, 2023 Rehoboth Beach Seashore Marathon and many others. Duncan's dedication to running extends to his aspirations of qualifying for the Olympic Trials in the marathon.
During his own collegiate career at Chadron State College (NCAA Division II), Duncan achieved remarkable success as an eight-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) qualifier and a four-time South Central Regional cross country qualifier. He holds a top-three mark in the program's history for the 10K track event and was honored as the CSC Most Valuable Runner in 2017. Furthermore, he received recognition as an RMAC All-Academic team selection in 2016. Prior to his college days, Duncan garnered recognition as a two-time NSAA State Championships medalist in track and cross country while competing for Chadron High School.
Duncan has a B.S in Education and Coaching, M.S in Organizational Leadership and is a USATF Certified coach.
Outside of his athletic pursuits, Duncan works full time at a running shoe store, Fleet Feet, where he also assists with community runs and training groups, he is an Eagle Scout as well as has participated in multiple music groups.
