Bobcats stay hot in series win over Western Nebraska

Beatrice, Neb. – Southeast Community College continued its hot streak in a home series against Western Nebraska Community College on Thursday and Friday. Three wins and one loss moved the Bobcats to a winning record at 21-20, and propelled them into a tie for third in the region.

Southeast 6 – Western Nebraska 5

It was the Gabe Dalton and Brady Hunt show in the first game of the series. The duo accounted for all six runs scored by SCC, including a home run from Hunt to go up 6-0 in the third inning.

A late rally from the Cougars started in the fifth inning with scores on two hits and two past balls. In the top of the seventh, WNCC loaded the bases with two outs, but a clutch defense stopped the comeback.

Jordan Lemon started on the mound for the Bobcats. He threw 10 strikeouts against 24 batters in four and two-thirds innings. After a balk and two past balls, Will Flege came in for relief and threw five strikeouts and only allowed one run to record his first save of the season.

Western Nebraska 16 – Southeast 15

WNCC scored six runs in the second inning in a hitting explosion, and Southeast responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. It was a strong hitting performance for the Bobcats, and a run in the third inning and three runs in the fifth brought the game back into a tie.

It wouldn't be tied for long, as the Cougars would again record six runs in the sixth inning. Despite nine hits and five errors by WNCC, the script flipped from game one and an SCC comeback in the bottom of the ninth fell one run short after they scored five runs on six unearned bases.

Dalton stole base three times and Hunt recorded another home run for three RBI. Teigan Munce, Jordan Monroe and Chase Machal each hit a double in the outing.

Wade Spencer was first out of the bullpen for the Bobcats. He pitched five innings, recorded four strikeouts and allowed only two earned runs on three hits. Braden Ailslieger pitched for the sixth inning and allowed five earned runs with one strikeout to record a loss. Dominic Audino faced 10 batters in the seventh and eighth innings with one strikeout and three earned runs, and Chase Blanchard finished the game allowing one earned run and recording two strikeouts.

Southeast 11- Western Nebraska 1

In Friday's first bout SCC scored in every inning and only allowed two hits. The Bobcats scored 11 runs on just six hits to secure the series split, including two home runs from Jordan Monroe and a grand slam from Jack Hogan in the third inning.

In the fourth inning a walk for Dalton and a single from Martinez got SCC into scoring position, and a groundout followed by a sac fly by Hogan scored Dalton. Jacob Perrin was the second batter walked in the inning. Perrin then stole second base and created an error to score Martinez and put the run rule into play.

Van Haneberg toed the rubber for the Bobcats and threw seven strikeouts in four shutout innings, and only allowed a score in the fourth inning.

Southeast 8 – Western Nebraska 3

The first three innings of the final game were scoreless, but the game was anything but boring. Two quick hits put Western Nebraska in scoring position, but a strikeout and solid defense left two on base.

Hunt recorded the first hit of the game for SCC in the bottom of the first, but the Bobcats couldn't capitalize.

Three consecutive bases by Hogan, Perrin and Jasa loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth. Munce got SCC on the board with an RBI single.

A solo home run by Martinez doubled the Bobcats' lead in the fifth inning. Hogan got himself into scoring position on a double, and Perrin followed up with a two-run home run to extend the lead to 4-0.

In the seventh inning, the Cougars loaded the bases and scored three runs on two walks and a hit-by-pitch. A double play ended the half inning, and Perrin singled and Hogan stole home to plate two more for SCC to lead 6-3.

Hogan had the final say in the series with a two-run home run in the top of the eighth. SCC racked up 11 hits in the series-clinching win and only committed two errors.

Crew Moeller pitched first for the Bobcats. He threw for three innings and recorded two strikeouts and no hits. Cael Clancy took over and pitched the next three innings with a strikeout. Gage Sharping took the mound next and allowed all three Western Nebraska runs before Isaiah O'Brien took over to throw two more shutout innings to seal the win.

The Bobcats are back in action for a three-game series at Trinidad State this weekend. First pitch on Thursday and Friday is 1:00 p.m., Saturday is 12:00 noon.
